After Fifty Years… A Time for Reflection

Dear Friend,

Fifty (that’s right, 50!!!) years ago, I boarded a train called the Silver City Comet for Broken Hill in Australia’s outback.  Broken Hill was a mining town, stuck right in the middle of the desert.  It was to be our home for the next twelve months, and it was here that I got my first real taste for evangelism.  Pastor Edwin Tottenhoffer, a good, godly, and capable man, was the evangelist, and I was his intern.  I was enthusiastic, but that was about all.  Like many theology graduates I thought I knew it all, but when it came to the real world, I was a zero.

That year, 1962, saw me learning in the School of Hard Knocks, whose colors are black and blue.  I don’t think I was much of a help to the evangelist, but I saw for the first time the great scope, power, importance, and glory of God’s last warning Gospel message.  It got into my bones and set them on fire.  It still burns within me.

Since those far off days, Beverley and I have traveled far and wide, winning souls to Jesus.  I could have gone on to the Seminary and piled up letters after my name (all very good if it makes you a better minister), but I found a higher calling.  We devoted our lives to evangelism, and evangelism means, as we all know, the preaching of the Good News of the Lord Jesus Christ.

After 50 years of uninterrupted evangelism, we are by His great grace still at it.  We praise Him for His keeping and saving power and for giving us supporters like you.  This year of 2012 will see us (God willing) with our wonderful team in Russia, Ukraine, and again at the ‘Ends of the Earth’ — Papua New Guinea.  Like the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea is the land time forgot.  We are right now planning a huge outdoor campaign in Pt. Moresby and the locals tell us to expect crowds in excess of 100,000 souls per night.  That will be more than the audience in Honiara, Solomon Islands, where we recently saw 30,000 plus nightly.  Mind you, the size of the crowds is only important because it means more people will hear the Word of the Lord proclaimed.  They certainly need it, because that country is ravaged with crime and lawlessness.  Remember what that old warrior John Wesley said, “Go to those who need you but especially to those who need you most.”

Please help me raise the money for those lost souls who live in the Valley of the Shadow of Death.  I’m an old-fashioned Bible believing Christian (a sinner saved by grace) who still believes that men and women are lost without Christ (Acts 4:12) and that Jesus saves.

The Pt. Moresby (Papua New Guinea) campaign will be held in their biggest outdoor stadium.  We will need to raise a minimum of $500,000.00 for those meetings.  We will need to air-freight our equipment, purchase more P.A. amplifiers, and then build the stage, huge screens, and projector towers.  It’s a challenge, but God is able.

Please, dear tried and true supporter, please come to “the help of the Lord” again.  We will need to find $500,000.00 for the great Papua New Guinea outdoor campaign.  Then there are the Russian and Ukrainian meetings, but God will help you and me to keep the light burning in darkness.

With God, we cannot fail.  With Him all things are possible.  He is able to do abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us.
